Residential complex at Voula, Athens

In 70’s the model of big housing complexes developed at the north and south suburbs of Athens. Buildings on pilotis, housing big apartments with large openings, wide verandas and sometimes with parking spaces and common swimming pools were the new subjects of investors and construction companies. Investors were aiming for clients to upper middle class which were unable to fulfill the dream of an independent single housing on a worthy land.

The apartment block project was fulfilled in collaboration with Manos Perrakis architect and the design that came up is characterized by simplicity and clarity. The main propositions were big openings between the columns (8.65 m), free floating slabs at the level of pilotis and large projections (verandas) 3.00 m wide and 11.65 m long. The above choices were considered to be innovative for the constructions of that time.

The simple image of the building was hiding new modernist solutions of the concrete structure. The main morphological element of the building design was the neat load-bearing structure out of uncoated concrete. Two circulation cores service four typical levels of four apartments each from 91 to 132 m².
