The construction of low budget commercial housing buildings was not in the interest of our practice. Although, after 1996 the economy’s recovery gave opportunities for housing projects of higher standards and costs against the commercial “tradition”. A construction company which was known for their quality of services assigned our office the design of an apartment building in the suburb of Holargos. The company agreed to follow new tracks of high standards and expensive housing that suggested our practice.
The architectural proposition gave emphasis to the design of the floor plans and construction details, the quality of the materials and the high standards of building services. The elevations suggest discreet morphological references of the “early modern buildings” of Vasilisis Sofias road, which are specifically found at the decoration of the balconies, while the basic layout of the building is characterized by robust simplicity.
The four or the five levels had the same floor plan of two apartments in each, while the fifth floor plan was designed for one big apartment of 220 m² combined with large outdoor spaces – verandas covered with pergolas. The construction of the pergola out of wood and metal parts refers to old shades of Athens creating an art deco mood which is brought up to the chimneys.
Strong colors were used to highlight architectural elements and different materials such as brick cladding and metal elements alternate and contradict each other.
