Single-family house at Glyfada. Athens

The project is basically characterised by the substantial participation of the owners in the design process. Having in mind the strong memories of the interwar “grandmothers’ house” in P.Faliro, a reinterpreting of the inter-War period architecture in dialogue with the conquests of contemporary technology was attempted, keeping the virtues and the construction ethos of the artificiel, the steel glazings, the marble mantel, the mosaic floors, the round columns and the erker.

In a 1200m² site surrounded by high appartment buildings, a double-storey house was integrated, turning its back to the street and organized around a yard. The spaces of the house are articulated along a circular, introverted pathway leading from the public rooms used by the whole family on the ground floor to the more private areas on the upper floor.

Small openings to the north, opening to the south-east and crucial elements such as pergolas, semi-outdoor spaces and balconies offer shading and transversality. With the principal objective of “small houses within the house”, two different units were organized on the upper floor, one for the parents and one for the children.

The P.Faliro inter-War period house determined to a certain extend the materials that were used.
