Dynamo retail store. Kolonaki, Athens

The basic objective was to transform an intensely introverted store into a vital area of a “pass and stop” space that would be an extension and continuity of the pedestrian flow with the character of a typical commercial “arcade – walkway”.

The store was adjacent to an apartment building of the interwar period that eventually became the starting point for transforming the “blind” partition wall into a facade that would open to the store’s area. A facade that was articulated with elements we consider a continuation and re-interpretation of the elements of the apartment building (“artifisiel”, glazed panels with metal frames, retractable corrugated rolls, etc.)

New alignments were set to articulate the space without ignoring the shell. These alignments were not just set under a concept of visual pleasure. They are associated with the flow and the pause, along with the alteration and classification between the empty and the full, the “blind” and blocked and the completely accessible.

The selected materials and their way of treatment were based on a concept of a classification from the rough -as part of the floor with the brushed or oxidized marble, the “artifisiel”, the natural iron treated by sandblasting- to the finish and luster of glass, the stainless steel profiles and the floor’s porcelain tiles.

Finally, variable elements such as the retractable metal window rollers or the mobile systems for the display of the merchandize (men’s clothing), provide the ability of changes depending on the time, the season and the desired atmosphere for the exhibits.
